Dr Jan Nel qualified from University of Pretoria (RSA) in 1992 and moved to Coniston in 2003 after owning his own practice in London for many years. Dr. Nel comes from a family tradition of doctors and dentists.
He has special interest in aesthetic, cosmetic and restorative dentistry and always keeps abreast of new techniques and materials. This he does by attending relevant courses abroad and locally. He also does many hours of home study and meets up with colleagues regularly to discuss latest developments in dentistry.
Dr. Nel has completed his Masters Level in Aesthetic Dentistry with the Aesthetic Advantage Program at the Rosenthal Institute for Aesthetic Dentistry in the New York University College of Dentistry. On this program he trained hands-on alongside some of the best cosmetic and restorative dentists in the world, including celebrity cosmetic dentist Dr Larry Rosenthal.
He has also gained Level I and II in Functional Aesthetics in Clinical Practice. This is a course presented by Dr. John Cranham from the world wide renowned Dawson Centre for Advanced Occlusal Study in the US. They are leaders in the field of functional occlusion. Functional occlusion is not only a very important and integral part of the smile design procedure, but also important when restoring function and occlusion in mouths that have lost a lot of tooth structure. The latest tooth whitening techniques are also available to patients.
Dr. Nel has a great passion for healthy teeth, gums and smile. With a Comprehensive New Patient Consultation he is able to gather enough information in order for him to access any particular patient needs and dental concerns. This information helps Dr. Nel develop and tailor a Comprehensive Treatment Plan suited to each individual’s needs and unique situation. With the co-operation of the patient he can then decide how to approach attaining optimum dental health. A maintenance program will also be developed for each patient’s individual needs.
Dr. Nel has also many years experience treating very nervous patients and often uses a sedationist to assist him. When patients are sedated, they are fully conscious, but totally relaxed. This makes dental treatment pain and anxiety free for these patients. This means we are able to treat patients that would have otherwise opted not to have any treatment at all because of their dental phobia.
Dr. Nel, his wife and two children have lived in Walton on Thames for many years. He likes going to the gym and does spin classes on a regular basis. He is also a keen golfer, trying to reduce his handicap, and always up for a game or two.
