Patients often arrive at their whitening consultation with a clear outcome in mind but very little understanding of how the treatment actually produces that outcome. That gap matters, because patients who understand the process tend to use their trays more consistently and get better results.

Professional take-home teeth whitening, as offered at Coniston Dental in West Byfleet, works through a controlled chemical process applied gradually over two to four weeks. It isn’t complicated, but there are a few steps worth understanding before you start.

The Chemistry Behind Whitening Gel

Getting Your Take-Home Whitening Trays The Process - Coniston Dental PracticeThe active ingredient in professional whitening gel is hydrogen peroxide, or a precursor compound called carbamide peroxide that breaks down into hydrogen peroxide once it contacts saliva. The gel prescribed through a dental practice contains up to 6% hydrogen peroxide, which is the maximum legally permitted for take-home use in the UK.

Once the gel is active, it releases oxygen radicals. These small, highly reactive molecules are able to penetrate the enamel layer of the tooth and reach the deeper dentin. Inside both layers, they break apart the molecular chains responsible for staining, including the chromogenic compounds found in tea, coffee, wine, and tobacco. The staining molecules don’t disappear; their chemical bonds are disrupted, making them colourless or much less visible.

It’s a targeted process. The oxygen radicals interact with the staining compounds specifically, not with the mineral structure of the enamel itself. That’s why, when the gel is used correctly and at appropriate concentrations, the enamel is not damaged during treatment.

The Role of Custom Trays

The tray is not just a delivery vehicle. A well-fitted tray determines how evenly the gel distributes across the tooth surface, how long it stays active, and how much contact it makes with the gum tissue. These three variables have a direct bearing on both the quality of the result and the likelihood of side effects.

Pre-Wedding Teeth Whitening Planning Your Bright Smile - Coniston Dental PracticeAt our practice in West Byfleet, trays are fabricated from precise dental impressions. The resulting tray fits snugly around each tooth, creating a seal that keeps the gel in contact with the enamel and prevents it from migrating onto the gum. Generic trays, by contrast, can’t replicate this fit and allow gel to spread in ways that cause gum irritation and reduce the consistency of whitening across the arch.

  • Custom trays are made from an impression taken in a single short appointment
  • They’re typically ready within a few days
  • They’re reusable for future top-up courses with additional gel
  • The fit is checked before you take them home

What Happens During Each Wear Session

You load a small amount of gel into each tooth compartment of the tray, then seat it over your teeth. The amount matters: too little gel reduces effectiveness, too much increases the risk of gum contact. We demonstrate the correct loading technique at your fitting appointment.

The trays are worn for the period prescribed for your specific gel concentration, which typically ranges from one to four hours per session. Some gels are formulated for overnight use; others are designed for shorter daytime sessions. We’ll specify which applies to your kit.

During wearing, saliva activates the carbamide peroxide if that’s the gel being used, releasing hydrogen peroxide progressively. The oxygen radicals begin working immediately, but the whitening effect accumulates over multiple sessions rather than appearing after a single use. That gradual accumulation is by design: it produces more even results than a single high-concentration application.

Why Isn’t This Available on the NHS?

Teeth whitening is classified as cosmetic treatment and is not available on the NHS. The NHS website confirms that teeth whitening by a dentist or other dental professional can only be done privately because it’s considered cosmetic. There is a narrow clinical exception for internal bleaching of a non-vital tooth, but this doesn’t apply to routine whitening. All take-home whitening provided through Coniston Dental is therefore a private treatment with a clear fee structure we’re happy to discuss at your first appointment.

Who Can Legally Prescribe Whitening Gel in the UK?

Only professionals registered with the General Dental Council can supply whitening products containing more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, as set out in the GDC’s legal position on tooth whitening. Professional take-home trays use up to 6% hydrogen peroxide, and this higher concentration is what makes the treatment effective. Products available from beauty salons or online retailers are legally restricted to 0.1%, which does not produce meaningful whitening.

In our experience, patients are sometimes surprised to learn how strictly this area of dentistry is regulated. The restriction exists to protect patients: the gel concentrations that work are also potent enough to damage soft tissue if applied without proper clinical oversight and a correctly fitted tray.

What About Sensitivity During the Process?

Temporary sensitivity is the most reported side effect. It typically manifests as a heightened response to cold food, drinks, or air, and it usually resolves within a day or two of each session. Not everyone experiences it at all.

If sensitivity becomes significant, the simplest adjustment is to reduce session frequency, wearing the trays every other day rather than daily. This slows the overall timeline modestly but doesn’t compromise the final outcome. We can also advise on appropriate sensitivity toothpastes to use alongside treatment.

The process is well understood, well regulated, and when delivered through a dental practice, it’s backed by a clinical assessment that makes it meaningfully different from anything available without a dentist’s involvement. That’s worth keeping in mind when weighing your options.
